Yoga

Yoga

In Yoga there is the belief that the Divine, God, The Holy Spirit, is within each of us.  The Spirit is hidden behind the restless mind and the great ego.  By stilling the mind, we are able to commune with the God within ourselves.

I know She is there.  I can feel Her.  And She is beautiful.  She is calm yet energetic.  She is loving and compassionate yet strong and determined.  She has forgiven all, including me, of mistakes made because She understands that life is a journey full of turns, climbs, leaps and falls.  She loves even my father and reminds me that I should love him too.  Lately I have felt a great urge to be with Her.  When I meditate I focus on Her: who She is, how I can be more like Her.

There has been no greater remedy for my anxieties and pains than a daily dose of Yoga.  My mind spins constantly; I am reminded often of what I have done wrong and I beat myself up for it.  Yoga has taught me to let those thoughts go.

I have been trying my hardest to be more mindful. I seek to cherish every bite when I eat and feel the wind when I walk.  When I do those things I have found that there is no better place to be than the present.  The past is the past and the future is yet to come.  I will become who I want to be only if I practice being her in the present moment.

Maternity Series - Artist Statement

Color is a focus of my work for a variety of reasons, but the main reason is for healing.  My father was an angry and violent man. He took out his rage on his family daily and I took it upon myself to protect my mother and brother from him by becoming the focus of his fury. We didn’t have much, but my mother filled our home with colorful art to bring radiance into an otherwise dark place.  I followed in her footsteps and escaped into vibrant art of all shapes and forms.  Getting into the flow of mindful art creation has been the single most important part of my healing.  I hope to share the happiness that colorful art brings me with others, especially children.

Domestic Abuse, Written by an Immigrant

Why am I sharing this?  I have made it my life’s mission to fight for those who were less fortunate like me and my family, including my father who was also a victim.  The first step is increasing awareness.  We cannot hide in shame and statistics.  We have to be loud and talk about very personal stories.
